Four pages from a manuscript of Ferdowsi’s epic poem, Shahnameh.
The Shahnameh, “Book of the Kings,” is the medieval epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between 977 and 1010 CE. This bifolium is from an early 19th century codex. It seems to be later in the book, covering the late Sassanid history.
The calligraphy executed in black on wove paper.
Bifolium Size: ~510 x 361 mm (~20 x 14¼ in)
Each page size: ~255 x 361 mm (~10 x 14¼ in)
Overall condition is good for its age and the calligraphy is in good readable condition. The page exhibits water stains, finger soiling of lower corners, toning, rounded worn edges. The gold is rubbed in areas.
